Movies about Immigration
Lives for Sale (2007) Directed by Larry Rich. A one-hour investigative documentary exposes the painful, rarely seen human side of illegal immigration - including the growing black market trade in human beings.
Maria Full of Grace (2004) Directed by Joshua Marston. Story of an impoverished 17 year old Colombian who becomes pregnant and, in need of money, signs on as a drug "mule", smuggling cocaine pellets into the US in her GI tract. An exceptional film for a low budget one man band indie with a deubting artist in the leading role, this film imparts a strong sense of been-there-done-that reality as it follows Maria from Bogota to New York where her life begins to unravel.
Made in L.A.: This documentary follows the story of three Latina immigrants working in Los Angeles garment sweatshops as they embark on a three-year journey to win basic labour protections from the mega-trendy clothing retailer, Forever 21.
La Misma Luna: The perennial favourite, this movie tells the story of a young boy named Carlos who must make his way on his own across the Mexican border and to Los Angeles in order to reunite with his mother, an undocumented immigrant.
Dying to Live: A Migrant’s Journey: This documentary draws on the insights of Pulitzer Prize winning photographers, church and congressional leaders, activists, musicians and the immigrants themselves as it looks at the places of conflict, pain and hope along the US-Mexico border.
Farmingville: The attempted murders of two Mexican laborers pushed a small Long Island town into national headlines, while pointing to a new front line in the border wars: suburbia. For nearly a year the filmmakers lived and worked in Farmingville, New York, in order to capture the story of people on all sides of this debate.
Which Way Home: This documentary shows the personal side of immigration through the eyes of children who face their journey to the United States. It follows several unaccompanied child migrants as they journey atop the trains through Mexico.
Entre Nos: This story is about a woman who brings her two children from Colombia to reunite with her husband in Queens, New York, but whose life is devastatingly turned around when her husband abandons the family. The woman
and her children have to fend for themselves in a foreign country while she searches for work. In the end, she navigates a surprising avenue for making some money: the city's recycling.
Crossing Arizona: This documentary examines the issue of undocumented migration in Arizona through the eyes of those directly affected by it. Frustrated ranchers, humanitarian groups, political activists, farmers who depend on the workforce and the Minutemen are all interviewed in this documentary.
Sin Nombre: This movie is about a young Honduran woman named Sayra who is seeking the promise of el norte and who joins her father and uncle on a journey to cross Latin America. Along the way she crosses paths with a teenage Mexican gang member, El Casper, who is on the run from his former gang.
Papers: This is the story of undocumented youth and the challenges they face as they turn 18 without legal status in the United States. There are approximately 2 million undocumented children who were born outside the U.S. but raised in the country, and this is the story of the 65 000 youth who share this struggle.
